Text from the Latin hymn, tr. John Neale

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Dayspring, come from on high,
And lead us by thy drawing night;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.

O come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
O bid our sad divisions cease,
And be Thyself our King of Peace.
